On Bellingham Bay near Mt. Baker, Whatcom County’s Bellingham ranks as the last major city before Washington State turf meets the Canadian border. Squalicum Harbor is the second largest in Puget Sound, home to hundreds of pleasure boats and commercial watercraft. Bellingham’s downtown district is a quixotic mix of restaurants, art galleries and specialty shops, and its cultural district includes the Whatcom Museum of History and Art. Bellingham also is home to the hillside campus of Western Washington University, providing sweeping views of the San Juan Islands. Alaskan-bound travelers frequently depart from the Bellingham Cruise Terminal in the Historic Fairhaven District, rich in shopping opportunities. Other attractions include the Bellingham Farmer’s Market and Mt. Baker vineyards to the north. Whale watching, birding, water excursions, and Mt. Baker ski activity are popular, as is golfing at numerous area courses, and it’s possible to ride the Amtrak train either north to Vancouver or south to Seattle.
